Frequently Asked Questions

Full container load, less than container load, roll-on/roll-off, breakbulk, project cargo, and reefer. We plan the door-to-door move, including drayage, documents, and customs.

Pick FCL when your volume approaches a full container, when speed and fewer touches matter, or when cargo is sensitive. Choose LCL for smaller, regular shipments where consolidation lowers cost. We compare both against your delivery window.

Ocean containers are typically in three sizes:

  • 20’ Ocean Container – A 20-foot container’s external dimensions are typically 20′ L x 8′ W x 8’6″ H (6.10m x 2.44m x 2.59m). The internal dimensions are slightly smaller due to wall thickness, coming in around 19’4″ L x 7’8″ W x 7’10” H (5.89m x 2.33m x 2.4m)

  • 40’ Ocean Container – A standard 40-foot ocean container has exterior dimensions of approximately 40 feet (12.19m) long, 8 feet (2.44m) wide, and 8.5 feet (2.59m) high. Its interior dimensions are roughly 39.5 feet (12.03m) long, 7.7 feet (2.35m) wide, and 7.9 feet (2.39m) high.

  • 40’ High Cube (HC/HQ) Container – A 40-foot high cube container measures 40 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 9 feet 6 inches tall externally, with internal dimensions around 39’5″ long, 7’9″ wide, and 8’10” high, providing about 2,700 cubic feet of storage space. This extra foot of height compared to a standard 40-foot container allows for the storage of taller items or more efficient stacking of goods

Ask your Journey team member about open top, flat rack, or other specially designed ocean equipment that can be used for your shipment.

Transit times vary by lane and transshipment locations. Think in weeks, not days. Add time for port dwell and first and final mile. We quote to your required arrival and build buffers around known bottlenecks.

Commercial invoice, packing list, and bill of lading details are standard. Depending on commodity and lane, you may need certificates of origin, permits, or licenses. We prepare and align documents with carriers and brokers.

For U.S.-bound ocean imports, the Importer Security Filing must be submitted before loading at origin. We can provide customs brokerage services or coordinate with your customs broker so filings do not delay the move.
